Introducing my 14th release: Cockburn Central! It's the name of a suburb and train station south of the river in Perth, Australia, pronounced "co-burn" central.
I always had this thought of making a lo-fi / chillwave track which features Transperth's train announcer. This track was my attempt at making a track which simulates the sort of tired, dazed feeling you get from coming home from work in a train. It was also intended to be my own unique spin on "vaporwave", which turned out to be lo-fi and chillwave more than anything, even down to the "aesthetic" font it originally had.
The photo was taken when I recently boarded a train that was almost empty. It was in mid-March 2020, a time where people were asked to stay home due to the coronavirus, so maybe that's why. It's usually empty during the middle of the day anyway. I figured it was quite rare to board an empty train, so I took this photo, and used it for this cover art. I designed a hoodie-wearing bear (who was later named Cockburn, named after this track) and put him in the photo, then added a whole load of purple filters to achieve the lo-fi "simpsonswave" aesthetic (minus the Simpsons); zoned out, purple haze, listening to music and lost in a daze.
"You've almost made a bridge between the two islands of synthwave and vaporwave and decided to have a lie down on it. Which is great!" - James Burton on this track.
An interesting fact about this track: During the recording of the train ambience samples, some kids swore and coughed really loudly and pretended they had COVID-19, which was edited out of the original recording.
