2020 OVERKILL

My 40th and final release in 2020, "2020 OVERKILL" concludes one of the most catastrophic years in modern history. It is the on-steroids sequel to 2020 OVERTURE (moule.bandcamp.com/track/2020-overture).

2020 OVERKILL (2020)

2020 OVERKILL is an "extratone" track (music that's 1000 BPM or higher), as it clocks in at up to 2020 beats per minute.

I always had this idea to make a sequel to 2020 OVERTURE, my most-played track on Bandcamp that I didn't expect to be enjoyed as it was. I think there's just something awe-inspiring about very fast music.

The idea was to summarise ALL of 2020 into a track that's just as extreme as the year itself...seriously, this entire year has become one giant meme where all sorts of apocalyptic events like bushfires, a pandemic, financial collapse, social upheaval, a militarised police state, heightened surveillance, lockdowns, and everything from a dystopian novel all happened at once.

So, I thought it was appropriate to have a track which runs at 2020 BPM, as the sort of "final boss" of my releases this year. It's my crack at the whole "sum up 2020 in one image / track" meme.

What inspired me to start this was when I listened to a mix of extratone music while playing a racing game. I thought "Oh yeah?! I can make something that fast too!" and went to my laptop to make this.

Here's some fun facts about 2020 OVERKILL:

  • It was originally called "2020 FINALE" and the BPM announcer sounded less enthusiastic.
  • I thought about dedicating this track to the Bayswater Bridge, an infamous low-lying bridge in Perth known to cause frequent truck crashes. I then decided to turn it into the sequel to 2020 OVERTURE.
  • The staccato string melody is actually an altered version of the melody from 2020 OVERTURE.
  • "250 BPM", "500 BPM", and "1000 BPM" are actually 252.5 BPM, 505 BPM, and 1010 BPM, respectively. The entire track runs at 505 BPM in my DAW, so I could quadruple the beat speed to get exactly 2020 BPM later on. The beats are arpeggiated at 1/32 notes for 1010 BPM and 1/64 notes for 2020 BPM. But it would sound weird to hear the announcer say "2020 OVERKILL, 252.5 BPM" wouldn't it?
  • By the way, that's a text-to-speech (TTS) voice. It's not mine. =P
  • The cover art was an absolute pain to make, very laggy on my iPad. It was a miracle I even managed to save it!
  • It's my 40th release and 122nd track.
  • 2020 OVERKILL is the fastest track I've released (2023 NOTE: Not anymore!), but NOT the fastest I've made. I have another track that's over 12x faster than this, but I'm unsure if now is the right time to release it. (ANOTHER 2023 NOTE: I've now started progress on a track that's 128x faster than 2020 OVERKILL)

But yeah...this is one of the ANGRIEST tracks I've ever produced (particularly starting at 5:11). It's a harsh track for a harsh year, and I do NOT apologise for it!

Feedback is greatly appreciated!
